CHORUS:   from Badlands’ buttes to rolling hills

made black with evergreens

He Sapa:

the forest island (2x last time)

in a grassy Great Plains Sea

1     Black Hills trees:

descendants of ancient canopies surrounded

by Grasslands as far as you can see

 The Forest Island

in the Grassy Great Plains Sea

CHORUS

2     Conifers and deciduous trees

Ponderosa, Spruce, bur oak and Aspen

Green Ash, Box Elder, & paper birch

 The Forest Island

in the grassy Great Plains Sea

       CHORUS

3     Old Cottonwoods can be seen

along dry creek beds & flowing streams.

Lodgepole Pine scattered ‘round the Hills

and in Cathedral Spires -  limber pine

The Forest Island

in the Grassy Great Plains Sea

CHORUS

4     From Young Ponderosa called Blackjack

To Yellow bark, the older trees

A million strong — living hundreds of years

         The Forest Island

in the grassy Great Plains Sea

CHORUS
