Circle of the Sun
Words and music by Sally Rogers

In this world of cross-cultural pollination, one should not be surprised that the simplicity and heartfelt call of this song written by a Northern Michigan Yooper comes straight from soulful Southern roots. Sally wrote this song on the way to her father's funeral. “He had been seriously ill for years, and when he passed, we knew he was in a better place. As I was driving ‘Up North’ to Beulah, Michigan, what had been a torrential rainstorm with dark ominous clouds suddenly cleared, but just above me. The sky turned blue and the sun streamed down through the wet leaves on the trees. But on the horizon all around were those dark grey clouds. Hence ‘Circle of the Sun.’ My friend, Tiyi Schippers, was pregnant at the time with a baby, now known as the songwriter Rachael Davis. So the song was written for her coming into the world as my dad left.”
