Letter From the Editor

Welcome to the Fall issue of PIO!, an extraordinary rich gathering of songs, features, columns, resources, and “news to know” reports, which illuminate the scope and commitment of our membership. “Make a Joyful Noise” is the theme of this issue, with the subtheme, “All the Way Around the World,” taken from Katherine Dines’s CMN anthem of the same name. The contents reflect both these themes in deep and delightful ways, and continue to add to CMN history the shared resources and practical advice for those who teach, write, research, and perform. 

Fall issues are particularly rewarding, as they shine a spotlight on Magic Penny recipients. This year, we honor singer-songwriter, activist, educator, and longtime CMN member Sally Rogers, whose joie de vivre and passion inform both her music and her life. We also highlight the upcoming conference in Hyannis, Massachusetts and its bounty of opportunities to network, connect, and share the joy of music.

This issue’s outstanding articles and columns include Kayte Deioma’s not-to-be-missed article about musicians and hearing loss; Alina Celeste’s introduction to Padlet, a particularly useful and easy platform for sharing ideas; and Val Smalkin’s compilation of ten top performing tips drawn from her recent Facebook Live event. Peter Alsop joins forces with Stuart Stotts for a thoughtful and sensitive “Thoughts To Chew”; Anna Stange interviews our own Jane Arsham, a member of the remarkable SANS chorus; and Barb Tilsen illuminates another chapter of CMN’s history. And Monty Harper’s column encourages nonfiction songwriters to “keep an ear out for passion” while conducting interviews with experts.

I hope you will find sustaining inspiration in these pages—and that you will pass them on with a joyful noise!
