Ruth Pelham

Ruth Pelham is an educator, song leader, songwriter, workshop leader, and community organizer whose abundant warmth and exuberance accompany her performances for people of all ages. Her songs embrace themes of peace, justice, and environmental responsibility, and give voice to hope and possibility in these challenging times. In 1977, she founded the Music Mobile, presenting cultural arts and empowerment programs in schools, parks, festivals, libraries, universities, and diverse community venues. Based in Albany, New York, Ruth is recognized nationally as a pioneer in community arts and education and was acclaimed by Pete Seeger as “one of America’s greatest songwriters, and an even better community organizer.” Her songs have been recorded and performed by Pete Seeger, The Weavers, Holly Near, Peggy Seeger, Si Kahn, and others. Her songs are published in Sing Out! The Folk Song Magazine, Rise Up Singing, Rise Again, and Pass It On! Recordings of Ruth’s music include Collage: A Collection of Songs About Women, Under One Sky, Look to the People, Living In My Neighborhood, and Room For Us All.

Ruth is a co-founder of Children’s Music Network and has served on its board of directors for many years. In 2014, she received the Magic Penny Award in recognition of her accomplishments.  Currently, Ruth is the convener of the CMN Legacy Group, which for nearly three years has been working toward establishing a home for CMN’s archives at the State University of New York in Albany. The CMN Archive Collection will preserve and make public hundreds of materials that relate to the vision, impact, and evolution of CMN.

Presently, Ruth is working on the Music Mobile Legacy Project, which tells the forty-five year story of the Music Mobile via oral history interviews, photos and videos, newspapers articles and other media, exhibits, and hands-on programs and trainings. The Ruth Pelham – Music Mobile Papers are now being archived at the State University of New York in Albany to preserve and disseminate Ruth’s methods, purposes, and programs that have touched the lives of tens of thousands of children in the United States and abroad.
