  Be Succinct!
  
  Social Media is fun but it can also be an amazing tool for engagement of your audience and potential clients. It is always a good idea to state clearly why you are making a post and to limit it to one single call to action. Let’s say you have a photo of yourself playing at an event—are you posting this to try to get similar work? If so, do not use this time to also, for example, advertise your recorded events on YouTube. You do not want the reader to get bogged down with multiple calls to action and become overwhelmed and disengaged.

  Engage!
  
  Creating a social media profile is not enough to promote your business. It is critical that you engage on that platform to share your profile. Think of your profile like a single tree in an enormous woods . . . how will it stand out? Find your audience, share your posts to their page, and share their posts to show your engagement. Engagement is key!

  You need to understand your audience—inside and out! You should be able to pinpoint their needs, wants, and desires in order to create a successful social media strategy. Once you get a feel for who your target audience is, you’re better equipped to help them and get that next gig!

  Watch For Trends
  
  If you notice a pattern or strategy rising in popularity and it aligns with your messaging, then it’s a great idea to capitalize on it to drive engagement. Be mindful though, you never need to create a particular type of content just because you see other brands doing it.

What content received the most likes, shares, saves, comments? You’ll quickly understand what content your audience wants more of and what you need to drop from the mix by going through this process.

Devin Walker

Devin “Uncle Devin” Walker is quickly becoming a leader in the children’s music industry. His “Uncle Devin’s Drum Tales” CD won a 2013 Parents’ Choice Presentation Award and his children’s book, “The ABCs of Percussion with Music” CD, was named a 2015 National Parenting Publication Awards Bronze winner. He is also a Teaching Artist and Artist Roster member with Young Audiences/Arts for Learning—Maryland, where he performs assemblies and residencies in schools throughout the state.

Uncle Devin was a panelist and a featured artist at the annual KindieFest Conference in Brooklyn, New York (2012 and 2013), and has performed at the Kennedy Center, the National Theater, the Smithsonian’s Discovery Theater, Governor’s Island (New York), the World Café Live (Wilmington, Delaware), Kids Place Live—Sirius/XM Radio, Kids Really Rock (Boston, Massachusetts), Jammin’ Java (Virginia), Overtown Youth Center (Miami, Florida), numerous libraries, day care centers, summer camps and more. He was also the recipient of the 2013 Creative Curriculum Award for his volunteer work with the Homeless Children’s Playtime Projects in Washington, D.C., performing monthly music events for the children of the homeless.

Uncle Devin has been performing as a drummer and percussionist for more than thirty years, playing with local and international groups, such as Fertile Ground, Soul-In-Motion Players, Bottomland, the UMBC Jazz Ensemble, the Lafayette Gilchrist Project, the Contee AME Zion Church Connection, Sense of Urgency Band, and Godisheus International Funk Band. One of Devin’s greatest musical moments was when he accompanied on drums the Great Dizzy Gillespie during a 1985 Jazz Workshop in Baltimore, Maryland. Devin’s vast experience as a social justice activist is expressed in his music.
